Best FREE Waterfalls Near Asheville (Perfect for Families!)
Family trips to Asheville get expensive fast. Parking, attractions, food… it all adds up before lunch.
But here’s the good news — some of the best hikes around Asheville are completely FREE, and perfect for kids, beginners, and your family dog. Today we’re hitting two hikes anyone can enjoy: Triple Falls and Catawba Falls. Both are free, both are family-friendly, and I’ll show you exactly what to expect so you can pick the perfect one for your day outdoors. Making this Ashville NC things to do with your kids a fun and exciting experience for everyone.
Hiking North Carolina
Let’s start with Triple Falls, one of the most impressive — and most accessible — hikes in all of Western North Carolina.

And if it looks familiar, it’s because this area was used for The Hunger Games and The Last of the Mohicans.
And YES — it’s completely free. Triple Falls is great for families because you can see the waterfall with just a 1-mile round trip. The trail is wide, gravel, and safe. It has one short, steep push, but once you reach the top — the view is absolutely worth it.
If you want something easy but still dramatic, Triple Falls nails it.
Parking is free, but it fills fast.
Pro tip: Arrive before 10AM for the best experience.
And yes — there are bathrooms at the trailhead. Huge win if you’re traveling with kids. Difficulty rating from me?
Easy to Moderate — short distance, just that one quick climb.
What to do in Asheville
Next is Catawba Falls, and if you have kids who love to explore, this one’s a hit.
The new renovations have completely transformed this trail.

Now you get safe boardwalks, fun bridges, little stream crossings, and a wide smooth trail that most kids can do easily. It’s 2.2 miles round trip, but it feels shorter because the terrain changes constantly and keeps everyone engaged. Parking? Free. Bathrooms? Brand new — which every parent knows is a big win.
When you reach the Lower Falls, take your time — this is the family zone. Shaded, calm water, and plenty of room to sit. It’s perfect for breaks, snacks, safe splashing, and of course, family photos. There is an upper falls route, but it’s steep and not recommended for families. So, stick to the Lower Falls for a relaxing, free day outdoors.
