I’m here to show you how to have a blast in Brevard on a budget. So, stick around as I share the local secrets for big fun that’s light on your wallet.

Forget the overhyped tourist traps. I spent two days diving into the heart of Brevard, North Carolina, just outside of Asheville, to craft the perfect guide for anyone looking to have an amazing time without breaking the bank. I’m talking about a treasure hunt that’s actually worth the hype, a perfect riverside spot that’s totally free, and an adventure that delivers huge thrills for zero dollars. This is the Brevard the locals love, and I’m letting you in on it.

Short Vacation Ideas

First up, let’s talk about an activity that’s basically a real-life treasure hunt. Crystal Mountain Gem Mine is downtown and ranked as Brevard’s #1 attraction, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s some overpriced tourist trap. For a surprisingly low price, you can grab a bucket of local mine dirt and sift for your own gemstones at their giant indoor water flume. You get to keep everything you find, whether it’s amethyst and quartz or even a real ruby or emerald. The look on a kid’s face when they find that first sparkling stone is priceless, but luckily the experience itself is super affordable, with options starting around sixteen dollars. It’s a fantastic hands-on experience that gives you a beautiful souvenir to take home.

Best Travel Hacks

My mission was to find a huge adventure with a tiny price tag, and I found the perfect combo. First, we headed to Looking Glass Falls. Now, you can’t visit the “Land of Waterfalls” without seeing one, and this one is famous for a reason. It’s a 60’ waterfall that can be seen from the road. But, if you feel like getting closer, just take the family friendly stairs down to see this beautiful waterfall up close.

Then less than a mile down the road is Moore Cove Falls. It’s an easy, family-friendly 1.2 to 1.4-mile roundtrip hike that is pure magic. The trail itself is enchanting, with charming wooden bridges crossing over a creek in a cool, shady forest. The grand finale is a stunning 50-foot waterfall that you can actually walk behind. Feeling the mist on your face as you stand in the cove is an unforgettable experience, and Like Looking Glass Falls, it’s 100% free.

Ready for a spot with million-dollar vibes that costs absolutely nothing? Welcome to the Looking Glass Picnic Area. This is where the locals go. Tucked into the lush embrace of Pisgah National Forest, this picture-perfect retreat is right on the banks of the Davidson River. It’s the perfect place to spread out a blanket and just relax. It’s a gorgeous, fun, and completely free and sits between Looking Glass Falls and Moore Cove Falls. Bring a picnic basket for budget friendly meal.

Mini Vacation Ideas

To make the day even more memorable, I went on a hunt for Brevard’s unofficial town mascot: the white squirrel. As the legend goes, they escaped from a carnival truck decades ago, and now they thrive here. Spotting one of these little guys is a local rite of passage, and I found the best places to look are on the grounds of Brevard College. If you are unlucky at the College, try these spots as well: Silvermont Park and Mansion and Franklin Park & Pool. Be sure to check the street that immediately surround the park, that’s a common place for the white squirell.

It costs nothing, and it turns a simple walk into an exciting wildlife safari. If your family has fallen in Love with the White Squirrel, stop by the White Squirrel Shoppe for a Souvenir to help everyone remember this trip.

Restaurants in Brevard NC

While you are downtown if shopping at the White Squirrel Shoppe and happen to be hungry again, stop by Sully Steamers. This is a perfect budget friendly place to get something to eat. What is unique about Sully Steamers, is they steam the bagels. So, every sandwich come out warm as it if the bagel was just baked.  I had the Vulcan, and it was absolutely delicious while not breaking the bank
