Just a quick drive north of Tampa, you will find a hiking trail that could be the most incredible hike you never heard of. Spanning over 6500 acres, this is a hidden treasure that is definitely worth a visit. So, lace up your hiking boots, pack some water and sunscreen, and come along with me as we explore Serenova Tract.

Hidden Gems

If you enjoy hikes that exceed a mile, then Serenova Tract should be one of your hiking destinations. It boasts 16 miles, or so, of multiuse trails. As you hike, you might encounter bicycles or even a horse or two on the same path. During the rainy season, certain areas can become overgrown and quite muddy. The fact that it is more of a wilderness park than an urban park only enhances the charm of the location making it perfect for adventure seekers. This place definitely gives me explorer vibes.

Hiking Highlights

Some people claim that in the Serenova Tract, Al Capone and his gang used to take refuge. Others believe it is just a legend. Regardless, I find it quite fascinating. As you explore these wilderness escapes, you might come across the remnants of his alleged structure, specifically a chimney. To reach the remains, you will need to hike two and a half miles in. Although the park offers some stunning scenic trails, the chimney itself is not particularly impressive. However, the story surrounding it could turn this into one of your most epic hikes.

The wildlife here is plentiful. You can find numerous birds, including egrets and hawks. Naturally, there are also turkeys, deer, armadillos, and more. I have heard that wild pigs roam in Serenova, but despite all the miles I have hiked here, I have not come across any signs of them.

Additionally, there are several bodies of water scattered throughout the area. There’s even the remains of an old bridge. So, if you enjoy water views found on hiking trails, this could be another advantage for you.

If you are wondering where to find these hiking trails, start your active adventures in Land O’ Lakes, Florida. The address is 14900 State Road 52, Land O’ Lakes, FL 34639. There is a small entrance that is not very clearly marked. To help you out, it is located across from a Publix Plaza and is on an unpaved road that leads to the parking area. You will find the entrance on the south side of the road, just west of Suncoast Parkway, opposite Hayes Road. The park is open every day of the year, with hours starting 30 minutes before sunrise and closing 30 minutes after sunset. You might encounter campers in the park even during off hours. The only restroom facilities near the primitive and equestrian camping areas consist of a porta potty.

This is a great place to hike, with so much to see and so many miles you can put on your hiking books. But if you have a desire for outdoor activities beyond hiking, this park is just perfect for you. You can tent camp. Camp with your Horse. Ride your horse. Go fishing and even ride your off-road bicycle on the trails. It’s everything I have written about that I believe that makes this place the most incredible hike you never heard of.
